Move to Enterprise Zone ‘future-proofs’ expanding business

November 22, 2018

An expanding electrical specialist says moving to new purpose-built offices on Hereford Enterprise Zone has helped future-proof its business.

Electrical engineer Melcon says the move – which took just ten months from first inquiry to moving in – has already allowed it to take on a new member of staff with further expansion planned for the coming months,
Melcon Managing Director Chris Williams said the company, which employs 24 people and boasts Heineken and Kingspan amongst its clients, decided to move last year after outgrowing its former base in Hereford.
It now occupies more than 400 square metres of state-of-the art offices on Skylon Park, branded in the company’s distinctive red and grey colour scheme.
“I first spoke to the Enterprise Zone team in May 2017 to confirm I wanted two plots of land and we had built our new site and moved in by the middle of this March,” said Chris.
“The whole process could not have been made easier. The team at the zone responded positively to everything we wanted to do, made sure no barriers were put in our way and worked alongside us throughout the entire project.
“I thought I had dropped a bit of a bombshell when I said I wanted the building to be bright red and grey, but the zone were really receptive from day one. I cannot speak highly enough of the way they have helped make everything we wanted to do come to fruition.”
Chris said the second plot of land the company had bought on the zone meant it was perfectly-placed for further expansion as it developed the consultancy side of the business.
“We have been able to future-proof the business through the move. We now have custom-built offices with all the space, equipment and facilities we need, as well as the land to expand as we continue to grow.
“The new offices have certainly helped raise our profile and the lean decision-making process at the zone has ensured the move was as straightforward as possible.”
The company, which was founded in 1966, had been able to improve its energy-efficiency as part of the move, and had used local contractors for all the building work, he added.

The Marches Local Enterprise Partnership has now ceased trading and transferred all its functions to Shropshire Council working with Telford & Wrekin Council and Herefordshire Council, in line with the UK Government's plans for devolution.

The Marches LEP was established in 2011 and hands over an impressive legacy from its 13-year life. In that time the LEP invested over £196m in projects across the Marches, securing in excess of £100m of match funding and supported more than 66,000 business interactions.

The schemes supported have made tangible differences to local communities, increasing skills, creating jobs and improving the physical appearance of many towns.

We would like to thank all the LEP Board Members who have given their time freely over the life of the LEP, as well as all the staff who worked for the LEP over the years. We also want to thank our delivery partners, local education providers and local, regional and national stakeholders who helped us achieve so much.

The Marches Growth Hub will continue to support businesses and will be managed by Shropshire Council, supported by Telford and Wrekin and Herefordshire Councils. Each of the three Local Authorities will also continue to provide direct business support locally. Details of this support will be available through the Marches Growth Hub website and from the Local Authorities directly. Website: | email:
