Roundabout improvements to keep Telford moving
One of the first projects to be granted funding via The Marches LEP’s Growth Deal with Government is under way. The Telford Growth Point Package will see a number of roundabout improvements take place to to open up development land which will create homes and jobs.
They have been identified for improvement due to the need to cater for future traffic growth at these key gateways in the borough.
The six roundabouts and the improvements taking place are as follows:
• Shawbirch Roundabout – widening of the roundabout and new entry/exit arms, improvements to the footway/cycleway and improved street lighting.
• Limekiln Roundabout –widening of the roundabout and new entry/exit arms, installation of a pedestrian crossing on Telford Way and improvements to street lighting
• Clock Tower Roundabout – widening of the roundabout and new entry/exit arms
• Trench Lock Roundabout – providing an additional lane on the approach from Hadley Park Roundabout and improving lane capacity on the A518
• Ketley Brook Roundabout – implementation of demand responsive traffic lights, additional lanes and widening
• Randlay Interchange – installation of part-time traffic lights on the A442 exit slip roads during he morning and afternoon peak to help with congestion at peak times particularly with vehicles leaving Stafford Park in the evening and possibly during major events at Telford International Centre.
The majority of the funding (£13.9m) for these improvements is coming from the Marches Local Enterprise Partnership, with the remainder coming from contributions from private investors through new housing and employment developments.
Councillor Angela McClements, cabinet member for Communities, Regeneration and Transport, said: “I’m delighted the council has been able to secure this funding to help ensure our road network can cope with traffic both now and over the next 20 years. “
Work is set to begin on Limekiln Roundabout next month, Trench Lock roundabout in April and the Clock Tower roundabout in June. All work should be completed by March 2017.
