New board members join The Marches LEP
The Marches Local Enterprise Partnership has strengthened its board with two additional appointments, David Llewellyn and Peter Roach.
David Llewellyn is the founding Vice-Chancellor of Harper Adams University, a position he assumed in 2012 following a three year tenure as Principal before full university status was attained.
With a Doctorate of Business Administration in Higher Education Management from the University of Bath, David is also a Fellow of the Institution of Agricultural Engineers; an Associate of the Royal Agricultural Societies; a Trustee of LANTRA, the Sector Skills Council for the environmental and land-based industries; and a board member of Landex, the representative body for FE/HE institutions specialising in land-based subjects.
He is, therefore, well placed to take a leading role in ensuring that education and research in the agri-food sector supports growth across the economy of The Marches.
Peter Roach, meanwhile, who is CEO of the Bournville Village Trust, will assume the role of Chair of the Marches Planning & Housing Partnership. In this role he will lead the body responsible for high level coordination of planning and housing strategy and delivery at a sub-regional level.
With a career in social housing spanning over 30 years, Peter brings a wealth of experience to the LEP board and in particular he is keen to promote the importance of investment in new housing which brings a range of economic and other benefits. There is a significant shortage of good quality affordable homes nationally and the Marches region is no exception in that respect.
The Bournville Village Trust is currently building a new village at Lightmoor in Telford which on completion in 2019 will see the provision of over 1,000 new homes plus a range of facilities. 450 homes are already complete together with a primary school, a community centre, shops, offices, a nursery and an extra care project.
Commenting on the appointments, Chairman of the Marches Local Enterprise Partnership, Graham Wynn said: “I’m delighted to welcome David and Peter to the Marches LEP board. Their distinct backgrounds and wealth of experience will bring additional strength to the board and benefit the whole region.
“We have ambitious plans as outlined in our recent Strategic Economic Plan and it is vital that we have the expertise to realise these ambitions over the coming years.”

The Marches Local Enterprise Partnership has now ceased trading and transferred all its functions to Shropshire Council working with Telford & Wrekin Council and Herefordshire Council, in line with the UK Government's plans for devolution.

The Marches LEP was established in 2011 and hands over an impressive legacy from its 13-year life. In that time the LEP invested over £196m in projects across the Marches, securing in excess of £100m of match funding and supported more than 66,000 business interactions.

The schemes supported have made tangible differences to local communities, increasing skills, creating jobs and improving the physical appearance of many towns.

We would like to thank all the LEP Board Members who have given their time freely over the life of the LEP, as well as all the staff who worked for the LEP over the years. We also want to thank our delivery partners, local education providers and local, regional and national stakeholders who helped us achieve so much.

The Marches Growth Hub will continue to support businesses and will be managed by Shropshire Council, supported by Telford and Wrekin and Herefordshire Councils. Each of the three Local Authorities will also continue to provide direct business support locally. Details of this support will be available through the Marches Growth Hub website and from the Local Authorities directly.
