Help NMiTE design future learning spaces in Herefordshire

December 3, 2019

New Model in Technology and Engineering (NMiTE) the proposed Higher Education Institution, has put out a call to architects and designers, including local firms in Herefordshire, around its competition to help create the designs for three new buildings on the Skylon site.
Deadline for expression of interest is Thursday 5th December and for designs is 20th December 2019. The successful company will join the NMiTE Skylon Campus team and have a budget of £10,000 to help develop a scheme to facilitate pre application discussion and the submission of an early planning application through the (LDO) Local Development Order Process. This stage will also provide enough information to allow NMiTE to progress with the procurement process for detailed designs and project delivery.
“We’d be delighted to hear from local architects and designers who will then generate the design for the tender process. Key requirements from NMiTE are that companies should have experience with educational sites and timber technology” says Toby Kinnaird, Head of Partnerships at NMiTE.
The Campus buildings will each need to have the capacity to be able to host around 200 future learners, degree apprenticeships and CPD short courses:
The Centre for Advanced Timber technology (CATT), showcasing timber as a construction material
The Centre for Automated Manufacture (CAM), servicing the manufacturing sector
Centre for Future Skills (CFS), a large flexible industrial space to allow development and testing of different technologies

The project to create NMiTE is being strongly backed by engineering businesses, the Herefordshire community, Herefordshire Council, Olin College of Engineering (USA), professional engineering bodies and the UK Government, which awarded up to £23million in initial funding.  £8million of this funding for the project was awarded by the Marches LEP via its Growth Deal with Government. Growth Deals are awarded to LEPs through a competitive bidding process to fund the delivery of projects to boost the local economy.

The Marches Local Enterprise Partnership has now ceased trading and transferred all its functions to Shropshire Council working with Telford & Wrekin Council and Herefordshire Council, in line with the UK Government's plans for devolution.

The Marches LEP was established in 2011 and hands over an impressive legacy from its 13-year life. In that time the LEP invested over £196m in projects across the Marches, securing in excess of £100m of match funding and supported more than 66,000 business interactions.

The schemes supported have made tangible differences to local communities, increasing skills, creating jobs and improving the physical appearance of many towns.

We would like to thank all the LEP Board Members who have given their time freely over the life of the LEP, as well as all the staff who worked for the LEP over the years. We also want to thank our delivery partners, local education providers and local, regional and national stakeholders who helped us achieve so much.

The Marches Growth Hub will continue to support businesses and will be managed by Shropshire Council, supported by Telford and Wrekin and Herefordshire Councils. Each of the three Local Authorities will also continue to provide direct business support locally. Details of this support will be available through the Marches Growth Hub website and from the Local Authorities directly.
