Enterprise advisers wanted

June 1, 2022

Inspirational businesspeople are being urged to sign up to a scheme to help develop world-class careers advice across the Marches’ schools and colleges.

The Marches Careers Hub wants more Enterprise Advisers across the region to help put opportunities with local employers at the heart of the education system.

The move is aimed at bridging the gap between education and the workplace, giving youngsters an inspiring insight into the world of work and creating high-quality careers advice and resources.

Mandy Thorn, chair of the Marches LEP, said the Enterprise Adviser Network was a key part of ensuring the region had the skills and entrepreneurial passion needed for generations to come.

“The more individuals from our great business community we can get involved working with our schools and colleges as part of the Enterprise Adviser Network, then the more our youngsters will benefit and the better it will be for the long-term health of our economy.

“We want youngsters across the county to be fired up about what the world of work can offer them – and what they can give in return – and by creating a network of top-quality businesspeople working directly with the leadership teams at our schools and colleges we can do just that.

“I would urge anybody with a love of business who wants to give something back to the community and also help develop the brightest possible future for our youngsters to get involved.

“We would particularly encourage our younger entrepreneurs and women in business to get involved to show our youngsters that people just like them are making a real mark in the world of work.”

The Enterprise Adviser Network matches schools and colleges with volunteers to help create powerful, lasting partnerships between schools, colleges, employers and careers programme providers.

Advisers work closely with the headteacher or Senior Leadership Team of a school or college to provide strategic support and use their business experience and professional networks to help develop and implement an effective careers strategy that puts opportunities with local employers at the heart of a young person’s education.

Advisers are supported by a trained, full-time Enterprise Coordinator and have access to a range of practical resources. They can also benefit from peer support from other volunteers and broaden their network of contacts further.

The Marches Local Enterprise Partnership has now ceased trading and transferred all its functions to Shropshire Council working with Telford & Wrekin Council and Herefordshire Council, in line with the UK Government's plans for devolution.

The Marches LEP was established in 2011 and hands over an impressive legacy from its 13-year life. In that time the LEP invested over £196m in projects across the Marches, securing in excess of £100m of match funding and supported more than 66,000 business interactions.

The schemes supported have made tangible differences to local communities, increasing skills, creating jobs and improving the physical appearance of many towns.

We would like to thank all the LEP Board Members who have given their time freely over the life of the LEP, as well as all the staff who worked for the LEP over the years. We also want to thank our delivery partners, local education providers and local, regional and national stakeholders who helped us achieve so much.

The Marches Growth Hub will continue to support businesses and will be managed by Shropshire Council, supported by Telford and Wrekin and Herefordshire Councils. Each of the three Local Authorities will also continue to provide direct business support locally. Details of this support will be available through the Marches Growth Hub website and from the Local Authorities directly.
